“Make One Change” - ASH becomes a Fairtrade School
What a great start to 2017: the Fairtrade group at American School of The Hague accomplished their goal of making ASH a Fairtrade school, and received a glowing report recognizing their hard work and commitment to promoting a fairer deal for growers and producers. The Fairtrade flag will be presented to ASH by the Executive Director of Max Havelaar, Mr. Peter D’Angremond, during the International Parade on Friday, March 31st.
The goal was created at the start of the 2015 - 2016 school year when the first Fairtrade team met in 8th grade, under the leadership of Ms. Paul, Mrs. Neeland and Ms. Forde. Together they set about doing a variety of awareness building activities like “Fairtrade Friday” and skits at assemblies (dressed in banana suits). The Grade 8 Committee members spoke with Administration and the Cafeteria manager about adding new Fairtrade products to the school and now, ASH proudly serves both Fairtrade tea and coffee.
This year, the newly formed High School Fairtrade team spent a Saturday raising awareness in Wassenaar’s supermarket, Jumbo, promoting Fairtrade products to consumers. They even got a mention in the local newspaper. In the Middle School, the team was put to work setting up Fairtrade displays and raising awareness during their assemblies.
The hard work done by both teams has led to this fantastic accomplishment for our school, and a status that the school will hopefully hold for many more years to come.
