Cooking for a Cause

Each month, a group of 11 High School students gather in the Home Economics room to bake delicious cupcakes for the “Meals for the Homeless” shelter in The Hague. The Cooking for a Cause Club was started by an ASH Alumni who won the Girl Scout Gold award last year for her service efforts.

This year, the club leaders are students Julie, Mary Grace, María, and Caity. Together they plan, organize and prepare the ingredients and utensils for the cooking sessions and lead the volunteer cooks at the soup kitchen where they serve the desserts and clean up once a month.

The students choose the recipes, buy the ingredients and meet every month to cook 100 desserts and prepare the boxes for the shelter. This is a rewarding opportunity for service learning, community engagement and to bring change locally, right in our own neighborhood. The skills learned and the intent behind this activity simultaneously helps people in need and our students as they practice empathy.

Funding for this program comes from a generous grant from the PTO who sponsors all ingredients and materials. Also our school driver is involved as he makes a special dessert delivery to the shelter each month.

If you'd like to join the club or volunteer at the shelter, please email our staff advisor Ms. López at plopez@ash.nl.
