Middle School Students Delve into Art and Design

How might we collaboratively shape an artistic investigation of an aspect of present-day life using a contemporary practice of art and design? Recently, Grades 7 and 8 Art students delved into this essential question while working with Matthew Vanderborgh, Director of C Concept Design cconceptdesign.com, a firm that designs and executes urban architectural spaces across the globe.

Matthew discussed the importance of art in the lives of architects and designers, and engaged with our students in a Lego challenge where they designed and created a building that had to hold an egg while the surface of the structure shook (think earthquake). Matthew brought along two designers who helped assess the student constructions based on the criteria of aesthetics, quality and structural stability. In essence, the higher the building, the more points the teams accrued.

This learning opportunity allowed students to connect the importance of critical thinking, collaboration and creativity to their Art studies. Of great value was the feedback they received from professionals in the field, which allowed them to understand their potential and options in the world of design and architecture. They also had tons of fun breaking eggs in the process!
