Sustainability at ASH

American School of The Hague is member of the international organization Eco-Schools. Eco-Schools is an international award program that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed the principles of sustainability into the heart of school life. In May 2016, we were re-accredited the Green Flag award for all the work we have done to improve the sustainability of the school.

ASH Sustainability is composed of Elementary, Middle and High School students, parents, teachers and management working towards fulfilling the Eco-Schools Pillars, Raising Green Awareness and embedding Sustainability into the Curriculum.

Fairtrade School

On Friday, March 31st 2017, American School of The Hague (ASH) was awarded the title of Fairtrade School. That day, Executive Director of the Stichting Max Havelaar, Mr. Peter D’Angremond presented the Fairtrade School plaque to Dr. Richard Spradling, Director of ASH.

Max Havelaar Director, Mr. D’Angremond, praised the school for its efforts and engagement on the road to gaining this title. “This process demands a lot from a school, and the members of the organizing committee deserve a round of applause for their commitment. This is about more than serving a ‘good’ cup of tea or coffee, for which the producers have received a ‘good’ price. Students in developing countries do not enjoy the opportunities that students here at ASH experience. However, thanks to its Fairtrade School status, ASH is now actively contributing to the lives of students in other countries.” In his acceptance speech, Dr. Spradling pointed out that “we must not think just about ourselves, but also about those around us, near and far. Each student who has paraded here today is proud to represent his or her country and together we celebrate the diversity of our community. When we unite, we can achieve our common goals.”
