ASH Cafeteria Serves up Success

Staff Win Gezonde Schoolkantine Award

Each day, our dedicated Eurest cafeteria staff prepare a variety of delicious meal options for our student, parent and staff community. Spanning two campuses, four lunchtimes, and the demand from hungry appetites of hundreds, the cafeteria staff work tirelessly to prepare meals for diverse palettes, cultural preferences, and dietary requirements. From meatless Mondays, vegan, gluten-free and vegetarian choices, to fresh fruit, a salad bar, daily hot lunches, and smoothies, our students can feed their minds and bodies with healthy choices that help them power through the school day.

Getting our students engaged, they hold “design a sandwich” competitions throughout the school year to encourage healthy eating and active participation in the food served to the student body. Students can learn about the vegetable or fruit of the month on our digital screens around the school, teaching them about the nutritional value of in-season produce. And making it easy to pay is a must, with the cashless lunch system implemented to decrease lines during lunchtime and making payment easy for even our youngest of students.

Have you noticed that the smoothie cups and straws are made of paper, and the pre-packaged food has less plastic too? Or that the snack options include dried fruit, fresh yogurt or quick energy nut and oat bars? Not only paying attention to what they serve to eat, our cafeteria staff also listen to parent feedback about reducing the amount of sugar in items available and the use of sustainable packaging. Even Mike Smith, the motivational speaker who visited ASH last week, remarked that our cafeteria was the best he had ever visited, out of the hundreds he has eaten at across the United States and in Europe.

It is because of their passion for the culinary arts, and their flexible approach in our international school setting, that our cafeteria staff recently claimed the “Gezonde Schoolkantine” Zilver Award for the 2019-2020 school year. This program recognizes the efforts of schools across the Netherlands to offer healthy choices to students, and to be bestowed this honor truly highlights how exceptional our cafeteria services really are at ASH. In the words of the Dutch, “eet smakelijk allemaal” as you enjoy your next meal in the ASH Cafeteria!
