GRADE 5
Language Arts explores reading, writing, listening, speaking and language foundations. Students read for a variety of reasons: for knowledge, for critical awareness, self-awareness, and for enjoyment. They read and respond to various texts, both literary and non-literary. Writing, as a process, is developed as a practice for learning, creative discovery, and for deepening understanding. Spoken language is nurtured as a practice for inquiry, persuasion, storytelling, and informing. To ensure development of effective reading, writing, and speaking, students must also gain an understanding of vocabulary and conventions, which includes English grammar, usage, and mechanics. Ultimately, this course is designed to help students become thoughtful, lifelong learners.
