At American School of The Hague, we continue to prioritize our international community’s health and safety. In consideration of the Prime Minister’s advice of March 12, 2020, and in consultation with government offices and health authorities in the Netherlands, we decided to move our model of learning into our virtual learning environment from Tuesday, March 17 through Monday, April 6, 2020. Further to this announcement, on Tuesday, March 31, the government announced this closure would extend until Sunday, May 3.
On April 20, it was announced that Dutch primary schools would reopen on May 11, but with a number of strict guidelines that must be adhered to for everyone’s health and safety. After carefully reviewing these guidelines and evaluating the best course of action given we are a school made up of over 80 nationalities with a multitude of considerations we must be mindful of, ASH opted to reopen our elementary school campus while also continuing with virtual learning. We have given our elementary school families the choice of opting to send their children back to campus or to remain at home.
On May 19, the Dutch government confirmed the reopening of secondary schools on June 2, meaning that here at ASH we are able to reopen both our middle and high schools. Again we are giving our families the choice between the on-campus or at home environment, with all students to follow the virtual learning program. Students will be rostered different days for on-campus learning in order to adhere to the necessary distancing guidelines. Our community’s safety and well-being are at the forefront of every decision we make and we are constantly evaluating and reviewing our procedures.
As an international school, we align with the virtual learning practices at other international schools around the world: over the years, we have developed the technical skills and infrastructure, and have put curriculum delivery strategies in place to shift all learning into our virtual learning environment at any time. We are in ongoing consultation with our staff, families and colleagues from around the world and are dedicated to providing the best learning environment for our students.
American School of The Hague (ASH) is an international school located in Wassenaar, the Netherlands. In a safe and welcoming environment, we guide the learning of our students, ranging between 3 to 18 years old, who represent up to 80 nationalities, with 30 percent American and 12 percent Dutch nationals. At ASH, we learn how to build a better world as we become better human beings. For this, we are guided by our Core Values and learn from and for the world. We embrace everyone's voice, our unique differences and achievements, and service to others.
