The Arts in Elementary School

Art and Music classes are characterized by energy, engagement and excitement as students become deeply involved in the creative process. Together, they develop rich cross-cultural perspectives that allow students to fully participate in their communities. Individually, students of all ages benefit from self-discovery through the arts, gaining a sense of wholeness and connection to the world around them.

The Art program begins with our Transition Kindergarten students, who come to Art twice in a six day schedule for 30 minutes. Students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 come to Art 3 times in a six day schedule for 30 minutes. Grade 2, 3 and 4 students come to Art twice in a six day schedule for 45 minutes. The program for our youngest students focuses on exploring art through a wide range of media and art concepts. As students grow, the program introduces more formal lessons on elements and principles of art, theories of perspective, drawing realistically, and working with sculpture. All students have opportunities to work with drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, clay, Lessons inspire students to be creative and are a vehicle for individual expression.

Welcome to the Elementary School Music Department. We are very excited to have your children in our classes this year as we sing, play, dance and improvise toward independent musicianship. Here you will find photos and videos, literature about our methodology and curriculum and, perhaps most importantly, recordings of songs and chants that you may use to reinforce our program out of school. Sing with your kids at home, in the car, in the park, wherever you find yourselves. Dance whenever you feel like it. There is no such thing as too much music.
