As our IB Dutch Language students visited the Slavery exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, a high school debate team joined others in the Council of International Schools debate on inclusion through the lens of racism and equity.
“I think that the most impressive part of the slavery exhibit is the story of Johan Maurits, who had a great deal of influence in the slavery trade. It is very strange how there are still statues honoring him!” - Mats, student
“As we visited the exhibit, I realized, when I was the students' age, how little I knew about the role the Netherlands played in our colonies when it came to mistreating people. I think it is very important for this generation to recognize the way our wealth was gained.” - Ms. Jacqueline, teacher
“The discussion was very productive and I really felt like my voice was heard. I chose to participate in the panel because I don't think that students are talking about these problems enough.” - Ali-ikai, student
“It was the general consensus that yes, opening up and beginning to explicitly educate and hold conversations with students might be uncomfortable, but we would rather be uncomfortable with the reality of racism than ignorant to it.” - Marisca, student
We build a better world as we become better human beings, hear and value every voice, keep every promise, and celebrate every achievement.
