Upper Elementary Book Bowl 2023
“Book Bowl gave her the opportunity to share her voice, which has helped her realize that her insight is valuable and she can share it with her teachers and peers!” - ASH Parent.

Since Winter Break, the Upper Elementary students worked their way until the Book Bowl Final that took place just before the mid-term break. Held by the Library, Book Bowl is an important project where students practice all kinds of skills surrounding reading and communication in an engaging challenge.

For Book Bowl, the students are divided into groups and are given a book to read. When they came back from break, their assignment was to present their book to the other students and a board of guests. Their objective? To convince the audience their assigned book was one they should read next.

In two practice rounds, the students received feedback from their peers that helped them improve their skills for the final debate. After two rounds of Book Bowl presentations, the finals took place in the Theater in front of a large audience made up of parents and all Upper Elementary students. Each student had a turn on the stage and to share their insights on different things about the book, such as the plot, the characters, the setting and of course, why this book should be the next on your reading list.

Overall, the Book Bowl was a great way for students to develop their reading comprehension, work on their debating and public speaking abilities, get a taste of research, and participate in an activity by working independently and as a team by supporting their group as well as other students.
Some ASH Parents shared a few thoughts on how the Book Bowl impacted the learning of their children:

“Book Bowl has been such a great experience for Dottie. She had always been reluctant to share her observations and thoughts, even though she often had insightful things to add to the conversation. But Book Bowl gave her the opportunity to share her voice, which has helped her realize that her insight is valuable and she can share it with her teachers and peers!” - Mike & Brandi, ASH Parents.

“We have never seen our son Finnin so excited and motivated to read! His Dad and I were so proud of the argument he made about the book, as we could tell it really came from his heart and he connected on a deep level with the book’s main character. Book Bowl has given him a sense of confidence and pride that is so wonderful to see in him.” - Jody, ASH Parent.\
