SustainASH: Making ASH Greener Through Community
Every year, American School of The Hague (ASH) is proud to celebrate the achievements of its graduating students, knowing they are ready to make meaningful contributions to the world. Yet, even before graduation, glimpses of their future potential emerge through the personal projects and initiatives they undertake.
The SustainASH Club in High School shows the drive of ASH students to make their world—whether large or small—a better place. Students across all grade levels come together to organize activities and initiatives aimed at creating the most sustainable version of ASH possible.
The members of SustainASH share a deep sense of responsibility for the planet’s future. As Maggie, one of the club members, explains, “Because we, High School students, are the next generation of problem solvers, we believe it is important for all High School students to have an understanding of what sustainability is and how it is vital for our planet.”
For the team, it’s important to onboard other members of our community in their mission through interactive and engaging initiatives. Examples of this were showcased earlier this year when SustainASH planted tulip bulbs on soil beds in the playground, and when they designed and led recycling workshops for students at the Early Childhood Center. As Sissi, another SustainASH member, shared, “The interaction between younger and older students is essential for fostering a collaborative approach to sustainability. As High School students, we not only have the opportunity to teach younger students how they can make a difference, but we also gain valuable insights from their perspectives. This exchange encourages mutual learning, inspires action, and builds early awareness in younger students.”
In High School, students are encouraged to think globally about change through a wide variety of activities and experiences; from engaging in sustainability-focused workshops to participating in the Sustainable Development Goal Trips to Nepal, Thailand, and other countries in Europe. At the same time, they are reminded of the significance of local impact—starting within their communities and environments. In other words, students are shown how thinking big requires small steps.
SustainASH is just one of many student-led initiatives that reflect the passion and dedication of ASH students toward addressing global challenges. These activities are a way to address their interest in nature and the environment, as well as an opportunity to develop their drive to shape a better future for themselves and others.
Demonstrating the broader values of ASH students – to show their eagerness for learning, collaborating, and taking action to create meaningful change – their work is a reminder that these experiences help students discover their interests and develop a sense of who they want to become in the world. Through clubs like SustainASH, ASH students are laying the groundwork to become compassionate leaders, thoughtful innovators, and advocates for positive change.
