Stephanie Lap-Peels, Class of 2009: How ASH Shaped a Future at Google
Meet Stephanie Lap-Peels, Class of 2009. She recently returned to ASH as the keynote speaker for Career Quest, inspiring High School students as they explore their future paths. Now part of Google’s Communications Team, Stephanie’s journey from ASH to the tech industry is a testament to the power of curiosity, creativity, and global thinking.

From performing in JAKK and theater productions to analyzing media in class, ASH shaped her passion for storytelling and critical thinking. In this article, she reflects on the lessons, people, and experiences that influenced her path—and how they continue to drive her today.

What is your background at ASH?

ASH wasn't just a school; it was the launch pad for my life. I was a student at ASH from 2004 to 2009, graduating in 2009. Those years were foundational, shaping my academic and personal growth immensely. ASH ignited a spark that still burns bright.

What is one of the most valuable things that you took from your time at ASH?

Beyond the lifelong friendships, ASH gifted me the sheer joy of learning. It was where I discovered my insatiable curiosity and the creative drive that fuels me to this day. That passion, nurtured at ASH, it’s the engine behind my career.

How did ASH help shape your path in life?

ASH didn't just educate me; it shaped me. It forged a critical thinker, someone who understands the power of diverse perspectives. ASH taught me that a community built on global diversity isn't just a concept—it's a force multiplier.

Are there any standout moments or people from your time at ASH?
Beyond the typical classroom experience, ASH offered truly impactful learning. I remember, even back in 2004, we were learning how to critically analyze media and spot misinformation online – skills that are so crucial in today's world. Studying pivotal moments in history, like World War II, sparked a lasting curiosity about global events. And the arts program was exceptional. I had the chance to perform in my close-harmony singing group, JAKK, at my high school graduation, and to sing jazz covers at our school-wide talent shows. The theatre program, led by the unforgettable Mr. Cunningham, was a core part of the curriculum and transformative. We explored everything from Japanese Butoh theatre to commedia dell’arte outdoors. These weren't just activities; they were experiences that shaped who I am today.

What are you doing today?
Today, I'm at the heart of innovation at Google, on the Communications Team. At one of the most relevant companies in the world, with the smartest people in the most fascinating industry, at a time of momentous technological change. I get to tell the world about groundbreaking AI like Gemini and NotebookLM, showcasing how these technologies are changing lives. I also have the privilege of highlighting the incredible creators who've built vibrant communities on YouTube. It’s about sharing stories that matter, something ASH instilled in me the importance of.
