The holiday season is upon us and we love hearing about what our ASH students and teachers are doing in their classes to celebrate these festive times, while also making this a meaningful learning opportunity. Ms. van Hasselt, one of our middle school Dutch language teachers, shared with us a service learning project her classes have been engaging in to make this time of year special for the elderly in our wider community.
“We decided to take part in the 'kerstkaartjes' initiative from the Nationaal Ouderenfonds. The students have been writing (in Dutch!) and decorating holiday cards that this organization will send to elderly people who are suffering from loneliness because of the current COVID circumstances.”
What an incredible activity to take part in and this truly emphasises how our ASH teachers focus on opportunities to make learning that matters for their students. Ms. van Hasselt, also shared how some of her students felt about this learning experience and their hopes for the recipients of their ‘kerstkaartjes’:
