Our hearts are filled with deep sadness to share the passing of Bill van der Zwan on April 2, 2020; the longest serving staff member in the history of ASH. Bill was a part of our school community for an astounding nearly 51 years; starting his career in our school hallways in 1966 and embarking upon his well deserved retirement in December 2017. While he served in various roles during his momentous career, many of our alumni will remember him always as the bus driver who was the smiling face that picked them up in the morning and waved them goodbye as he brought them home from school. He was also a welcoming face to many of our current and alumni staff, the first many would see as they nervously arrived at their new life in the Netherlands, with wise and witty Bill there to make them feel immediately at home.
Bill witnessed the growth of ASH as its roots took shape watching the ASH family tree grow to include thousands of students, parents, staff, alumni; the acquisition and construction of multiple campus buildings in The Hague and in Wassenaar; the diversity of our community in cultures, traditions and identities grow over the half century he spent in our school. He shared in so many special moments of the ASH chronicle, and we were privy to sharing some unforgettable moments with him - milestone birthdays, staff longevity, and his final retirement farewell. Bill’s amazing career at ASH is unparalleled, and his record of service will almost certainly never be broken. His dedication to ASH was like no other; he will forever hold our deepest appreciation, respect and love for his countless contributions to making ASH a better place.
You will be in our hearts forever and always, Bill, always remembered and always missed. Our hearts go out to all who loved and knew him. Share your memories and photos of Bill via our online tribute below.
