Animal Adaptation in Action

“Grade 3 went to the Avifauna Bird park to launch our new unit, Animal Adaptation. Students toured the park with their teachers to look closely at the bird structures to see how they would function in their environments. When we returned, students wrote their own informational pieces on Avifauna.” - Ms. Kat, teacher

Avifauna Bird Park, by Grade 3C
Squawk, squawk!” shouted the birds at Avifauna. Last week, Grade 3 went to Avifauna bird park in Alphen a/d Rejn. It is located just 30 minutes from ASH. At Aviduana you can walk around a big park full of birds and other animals. It is the perfect place to visit on a sunny day.

The animals at Avifauna are beautiful. Favorite animals include monkeys, lemurs, and red pandas. You can find eagles, penguins, flamingos and so much more. There are different habitat areas such as a rainforest and a nocturnal area. “Look up at the end,” advised Kate. “And you will see kiwi’s.” At Lori Landing you can feed the Loris with liquid nectar. Be careful feeding them! They can bite you or even defecate on you. Gross! But they are usually nice. “I got scared,” said Anna. “But when you drop your cup they will leave you alone.” The park is so big that it is hard to see them all!

When you are done seeing the animals, you can go to the amazing playground. In the playground is a gigantic slide. There is a ride where you are buckled into seats and pull on a rope to go up as high as the eagle’s nest. On another ride, you get to drive little bumper boats around a river. There are cars to ride on, tractors to build with, and a big bouncy trampoline. Be careful - don’t fall in the water!

Along with visiting the birds, there is a show every day at 1:30. First, there is a water fountain show to grab our attention. Next, the trainer tells you about the birds. She feeds them and they soar in over your head. Lastly, she introduced a bird that will take donations. “Sit in the middle,” advises Olivia. “Maybe a bird will fly over you and give you a breeze.”

The third grade was very lucky to have beautiful weather for their field trip. They were able to see all the animals, learn about them, and have lots of fun. In science, they are studying structure and function and how these help organisms survive and thrive in their environments. “It was the best field trip ever!” said Finn.
