Supporting Student Growth at ASH: Standards-Based Learning & Guidance

High School is a pivotal stage in a student’s life, marked by academic challenges, personal growth, and important decisions about the future. At ASH, students are supported through a combination of standards-based learning, holistic guidance, and individualized support that helps them thrive in both Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs. Through this model, students are encouraged to pursue personal passions, build resilience, and develop the skills necessary for success in higher education and beyond.

Holistic Academic Guidance

ASH’s approach to high school education goes far beyond grades and test scores. The school intentionally considers every part of a student’s identity—interests, strengths, challenges, and aspirations. Through close collaboration among counselors, AP/IB coordinators, and grade-level teams, students are encouraged to explore their potential and make meaningful choices about their academic pathways.

Students are guided to view learning as an ongoing process rather than a task measured only by grades. This student-centered approach helps them make informed decisions about AP and IB courses while keeping future possibilities open. As IB/AP Coordinator Danielle Mashon explains, we help students understand that there is flexibility built into every pathway they choose. It’s not a closed door.”

Recognizing that students—often just 16 or 17—are making choices that can feel life-defining, ASH aims to reduce pressure, expand perspectives, and support decisions that reflect both academic strengths and personal interests. Choices become opportunities, not limitations.

Standards-Based Learning and Developing Learning Skills

One of the key pillars of ASH’s high school model is standards-based learning, a system focused on mastery and understanding rather than traditional grade-focused evaluation. Students engage in metacognitive practices from early high school, learning to articulate what they understand and identify where they need to grow.

Through regular reflection and goal-setting, students explore multiple pathways to success. This fosters independence, resilience, and a growth mindset—reinforcing that high school is a time for learning and experimentation, not just performance. Standards-based learning also strengthens confidence when students face high-stakes assessments such as AP and IB exams, allowing them to focus on skills and understanding rather than fear of grades.

Personalized Learning Support

A defining strength of the ASH high school experience is its highly collaborative learning support framework. Rather than functioning as a separate service, learning support is woven into classroom instruction, counseling, and academic planning.

Danielle sees this teamwork as essential to student success: “In some settings, this role would be isolated—just managing exams or tracking progress. But that is completely not the approach here,” she says. “That wraparound support is really incredible. It’s highly collaborative and genuinely student-centered.”

Teachers, coordinators, and counselors meet regularly to monitor progress, anticipate challenges, and plan for transitions. This approach ensures students receive the support and strategies they need, while also learning tools that empower them well beyond High School.

Encouraging Personal Passions

ASH recognizes that meaningful learning extends beyond academic achievement. The school encourages students to explore personal interests alongside rigorous coursework, helping them understand themselves as learners and individuals.

AP students benefit from the opportunity to specialize deeply in three or four subjects, while maintaining the flexibility to take electives or pursue creative, athletic, or personal projects. IB students engage in a balanced curriculum that integrates academic rigor with the IB core—Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS), Theory of Knowledge, and the Extended Essay—building a strong foundation for holistic development.

Exposure to diverse career and university options begins early. Students participate in university fairs, career exploration days, and advisory sessions that expand their understanding of what their future might look like. This intentional guidance builds curiosity, independence, and agency.

Rethinking What ‘Success’ Means

Whether students pursue IB, AP, or a combination of both, ASH works to broaden their understanding of success. Danielle acknowledges the increasing pressures students face—driven by AI, competitiveness, and rising expectations. Yet her message remains clear: success is about growth, not perfection. “If you’ve spent the earlier years not just learning the ‘what’ of subjects, but how to learn, you have a lot of power as a student,” she says.

This mindset helps students make purposeful decisions, take healthy risks, and develop confidence in their ability to handle challenges.

Preparing Students for Life Beyond High School

Ultimately, the goal at ASH is to prepare students academically, personally, and emotionally for the world beyond high school. Through holistic guidance, personalized support, and a focus on standards-based learning, students build a strong foundation in what it means to be learners. As Danielle summarizes, “whether you choose AP or IB, you have a strong foundation in what it means to be a learner.” This belief sits at the heart of ASH’s mission: helping students understand their strengths, explore their interests, and develop the learning strategies that empower them to thrive in university, careers, and life.
