Inside the IB Experience: An Interview With Lorenzo
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) is known worldwide for preparing students with the skills, mindset, and global perspective needed for success in university and beyond. At ASH, students can shape their own academic pathway—with the IB program being a popular option next to Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

For Lorenzo, a Grade 12 IB student, the IB offers the ideal blend of challenge, opportunity, and global relevance. In this interview, he reflects on why he chose the IB and how it supports his ambitions after graduation.

Why Choose the IB

The IB requires students to take one subject from six distinct academic groups, ensuring a holistic and comprehensive approach to learning. This structure encourages students to develop a breadth of knowledge while constantly making connections across disciplines.

Lorenzo’s course choices—Math Analysis and Approaches High Level (HL), Physics HL, Chemistry HL, English Language & Literature Standard Level (SL), Economics SL, and Spanish B SL—are a strong example of a balanced academic structure. “It allowed me to expand my knowledge in a range of different subjects,” he explains.

The Benefits of the IB

Many students choose the IB for its strong focus on critical thinking, global awareness, and real-world application. Lorenzo believes the program offers something unique: “a greater holistic approach to learning.” He recommends the IB to students who “know how to manage their time well and will take the time to understand deeply and interact with the coursework.” With universities worldwide recognizing the value of the International Baccalaureate, students graduate well positioned for globally oriented study paths.

But the benefits of the IB extend well beyond academics. The program is intentionally designed to help learners grow as individuals—developing compassion, resilience, curiosity, and a strong sense of international-mindedness. In the IB, personal development is viewed not as separate from academic achievement but as an essential part of it, shaping students who can contribute thoughtfully and responsibly to the world.

In the Life of an IB Student

The IB aims to develop learners who take risks, inquire deeply, care for their environment, and remain open-minded. Lorenzo demonstrates this balance daily. In addition to his academic subjects, he manages a study block and several extracurricular commitments, including Student Senate, Robotics (Co-Captain), Coding Club, National Honor Society, and a finished season as Cross-Country Co-Captain. This combination of leadership, creativity, service, and collaboration shows the IB’s core values put into action.

Looking Ahead: Prepared for a Global Future

With plans to pursue Mechanical Engineering after graduation, Lorenzo feels well prepared for the next step. The IB’s demanding yet supportive framework has strengthened his academic confidence, expanded his critical thinking skills, and broadened his global outlook. His experience showcases why the IB remains one of the most respected programs for ambitious, future-focused learners; students eager to challenge themselves, grow, and engage with an increasingly interconnected world.
