Inside the IB Experience: An Interview With Avantika
The International Baccalaureate (IB) equips students for success at university and beyond with a curriculum designed to cultivate critical thinking, reflection, and global-mindedness. For Avantika, a Grade 12 student, the IB program provides the perfect environment to explore her interests while developing skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

Why Choose the IB

Avantika’s IB courses include Math Analysis and Approaches High Level (HL), Economics HL, English A: Language and Literature HL, Spanish B Standard Level (SL), Chemistry SL, and Dutch B SL, alongside the IB core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay (EE).

“I chose the IB program because of the kind of learning environment it offers, the balance of subjects, and a curriculum where the main focus is on personal development, reflection, critical analysis, and international mindedness,” she explains. For Avantika, the interconnectedness of subjects—from global issues in human sciences to literature in English and TOK—creates a global approach that connects disciplines, and encourages thinking outside the box.

CAS, she says, is one of the best aspects of the IB: “It helps turn the global issues we address in our subjects into action, and not just limiting our knowledge to classroom work. This helps in understanding the gravity of the issue and find meaningful solutions for greater societal impact.” Through CAS, Avantika engages in volunteering at an assisted living facility, teaching English to children, and participating in leadership opportunities—demonstrating how the IB encourages students to apply learning in real-world contexts.

The Benefits of the IB

“The IB develops a way of thinking that stays with you even after the coursework is over,” Avantika says. The program trains students to approach problems from multiple perspectives, manage a demanding workload, and create positive habits that support lifelong learning. Core components like CAS, TOK, and the EE foster personal growth, communication skills, collaboration, and reflective thinking, helping students become socially responsible and globally minded.

For Avantika, the benefits of the IB extend beyond academics: “Every subject in the IB has detailed, in-depth information providing a variety of perspectives and pushes students to think about global impact. If a student is interested in this type of learning, then the IB program is the perfect choice that will help set a foundation for future studies.”

A Week as an IB Student

Avantika’s schedule exemplifies the IB’s emphasis on balance and holistic development. She successfully manages demanding academic work while engaging in CAS and other extra curricular activities, such as participating in Model United Nations, National Honor Society, and engaging in community service in a refugee center and an assisted living facility. By practicing a role in leadership, maintaining personal connections, and carving out time for reflection, she is a great example at reflecting the IB’s goal of developing students who are as academic as engaged in their communities.

Looking Ahead

After graduation, Avantika plans to study Economics-Politics or International Relations at university. Through the IB, she has developed critical thinking, global awareness, and a reflective approach to learning—equipping her with the skills and perspective needed to thrive in a complex, interconnected world.
