Inside the AP Experience: An Interview With Kota
As a Grade 12 student with a clear sense of purpose, Kota has shaped his high-school experience around curiosity, independence, and academic focus. His journey through the Advanced Placement (AP) program prioritizes engaging with subjects that interest him deeply.

Why AP?

Having lived in the United States until Grade 10, the AP system was already familiar to Kota, but an important factor for his decision to follow that pathway came from the flexibility that it offers. “The AP allows more freedom in designing my schedule,” he explains. Unlike programs that require students to explore a wide array of subjects regardless of interest, AP allowed him to tailor his studies to what motivates him. Within the AP course offerings, Kota is currently taking Biology, Comparative Government, and Calculus AB, while in previous years he completed courses such as World History, Japanese Language and Culture, Human Geography, Statistics, Microeconomics, and Macroeconomics.

This flexibility has empowered him to dive deeply into the fields is passionate about—especially economics, social studies, and global politics. With AP’s subject-specific structure, Kota feels energized by his academics and finds great joy in his sense of ownership over his learning.

Who Thrives in the AP Program?

For Kota, the AP program is especially well-suited for students who prefer mastering specific topics or disciplines. For those who are interested in preparing for standardized tests like the SAT or ACT, Kota finds that the AP system will provide a supportive learning environment.

AP’s approach, he says, gives students room to balance academic commitments with personal goals and interests. With fewer long-term projects and no requirements like the Extended Essay or CAS, students can dedicate time to studying for exams or pursuing extracurricular activities.

In Kota’s schedule, this is reflected in a manageable weekly routine, where between attending classes and studying one to two hours a day, he still finds time to play golf, go to the gym, and prepare for standardized tests.

Taking Ownership of Learning

Throughout his AP experience, Kota has demonstrated a strong sense of self-awareness. He knows what subjects energize him, what style of learning supports his success, and how to structure his time to stay balanced and motivated.

After graduation, he plans to study political science and economics at a university in Japan; which his selection of subjects through the AP system is helping prepare him for. Kota’s story highlights the value of finding an educational path that feels both purposeful and personal. For students eager to dive deeply into their passions, the AP program can be a powerful and inspiring choice.
