High Schooler Inspires Young Minds in Elementary Robotics Club
When the last class ends, it’s often only the beginning of an afternoon of even more action. For Disha (Grade 10), the end of the school day means just that. As co-captain of her High School Robotics team, and leader of the Elementary School (ES) Robotics Club, her afternoons look lively, and go far beyond building machines—it’s about sparking curiosity and confidence in younger students.

“We build simple cars, learn how to move servos, and do little coding challenges. One of the projects kids learned how to make a robot that plays rock-paper-scissors, which was honestly so funny and so cute. They also learned how to create a compass using their micro-bit.” Her goal is to keep activities creative so that students not only apply skills but also experience the excitement of making something themselves.

Working with younger kids can be very rewarding, as Disha shares: “I really like how excited they get. They’re so engaged and curious about everything, and it actually makes the room feel more energetic. I love that we as high schoolers are able to give back to the community and have such an effect on their lives”. Yet guiding a room full of energetic learners requires patience. “It also challenges me because I have to stay calm and patient, even when something doesn’t work or when everyone is talking at the same time. I’m learning that patience and optimism are the most important skills when you’re teaching.”

Leading the club is also a way to strengthen her own robotics knowledge, allowing her to re-apply it in her own team. “Leading this ES club helps me because explaining something to someone else makes you understand it better yourself. I understand concepts so much more, and I am so much better at teaching and guiding the new members of the High School team,” Disha notes.

Reflecting on her experiences, she recalls a particularly meaningful moment: “One of my favorite moments was when a parent shared how happy he is that his daughter has someone like me to guide her through robotics. It really motivates me to be more confident and keep helping these kids the best I can.”

Taking on leadership roles like this gives students the chance to not only share their knowledge but also to discover their own strengths and passions. It’s an opportunity to grow as a person, connect with others, and make a positive impact on the community, all while learning more about what they are capable of.
