ASH Students Participate in the 58th THIMUN
Our students recently participated in the 58th annual THIMUN (The Hague International Model United Nations), one of the world’s largest and most respected MUN conferences. Held each year at the World Forum Convention Center, THIMUN is a four-day simulation of the United Nations that brings together secondary school students from across the world to debate pressing international issues and work collaboratively toward peaceful solutions.

This experience reflects a core focus of our academic program: Peace and Diplomacy. These are central pillars of learning at ASH, equipping students with the skills, perspectives, and ethical grounding needed to engage thoughtfully with global challenges. Immersed in one of the most important hubs of peace, justice, and international cooperation like The Hague, students receive many opportunities to explore these themes through activities like THIMUN, visiting Model United Nations and debate to community service and active engagement in both local and global initiatives.

This year, THIMUN attracted approximately 3,200 students and teachers from around 200 schools around the world. The conference focused on the theme “Culture & Heritage: Embracing Diversity,” inviting students to reflect on the importance of cultural identity, inclusion, and shared responsibility in an increasingly interconnected world.

During the conference, students assumed the roles of country delegates, ambassadors, and NGO representatives. They conducted in-depth research, drafted policy statements and resolutions, and engaged in formal committee debates following official UN procedures. Topics explored included UN peacekeeping operations and the protection of cultural heritage sites, the role of education in promoting respect for cultural diversity, and safeguarding journalists’ freedom of expression in times of disinformation.

Participation in MUN develops essential academic and personal skills such as critical thinking, research, public speaking, diplomacy, and collaboration. As students work toward consensus and peaceful solutions, they gain a deeper understanding of international law, negotiation processes, and multilateral cooperation. For many of our High School students, particularly those interested in international relations, law, politics, and the social sciences, THIMUN offers a great opportunity to experience how complex global issues are debated and addressed in real-world settings, while building the confidence and perspective needed to engage thoughtfully with the world beyond school.

Beyond academics, the conference also offers a powerful intercultural learning experience. Engaging with peers from diverse backgrounds challenges students to listen closely, navigate differing perspectives, and respond thoughtfully to complex and often unexpected situations. THIMUN continues to be a learning experience that extends far beyond the classroom, empowering students to see themselves as active global citizens committed to dialogue, understanding, and peace.
