Growing Beyond Your Comfort Zone: An Interview with Gaby
For Grade 11 student Gaby, an important discovery of High School has been that the most meaningful experiences come from stepping outside her comfort zone and embracing new challenges.

One experience that challenged her most was taking Theater in 9th grade. Performing in front of others had always been a daunting thought, but the encouragement from her teacher and classmates gradually helped her become more comfortable on stage. By the end of the course, she had not only overcome her fear but also found enjoyment in performing. Although acting is not among her goals for the future, she shares that this class taught her the important lessons that personal growth often comes from stepping out of your comfort zone.

Following the Advanced Placement (AP) pathway, Gaby chose a broad course of study because she is still in the process of exploring what she wants to pursue after graduation. The flexibility of AP classes has allowed her to experience different subjects and discover the areas that interest her before deciding on her direction for the future.

Another class that surprised her was AP Human Geography. "It helped me understand the way our world is set up and helps you predict how things are using models and patterns observed," she says. The course gave her a new perspective on global issues and helped her connect classroom learning to the world around her.

Outside of academics, Gaby is deeply involved in the ASH community. Tennis has been a lifelong passion, introduced to her by her father, and she has also been part of the ASH basketball team since fifth grade. In addition, she participates in numerous clubs, including the SDG Thailand trip, Operation Smile, Operation Paws, The Hague International Model United Nations Admin, United Women, Medecins Sans Frontiers, Prom Committee, and many more things.

Beyond the classroom, Gaby’s involvement in the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) trip to Thailand has had a lasting impact on her perspective. After three years in the program, working with a school for Burmese migrant students in Thailand has strengthened her understanding of empathy and service. “Before going on the actual trip I understood the importance of what we were doing, but it was when I actually got to see their lives with my own eyes that I saw how important it is that we try to do our best with these projects,” she reflects. The experience also changed the way she views community and connection. “Rather than simply helping others, I realized that meaningful change comes from listening, learning, and working together,” Gaby explains. Through these experiences, she has learned to appreciate her own opportunities while building connections with people whose experiences differ from her own.

While each activity offers a different experience, they share a common purpose: creating a stronger community. Through fundraising, event planning, and student initiatives, Gaby enjoys finding ways to make a positive impact, even through small actions.

After graduation, Gaby hopes to attend university in Europe and is considering studying International Relations or Chemistry.
