In Loving Memory

Our hearts are heavy as we share the sad news of alumni and a current ASH staff whom have passed away in the last months: Current ASH Staff Kellie Gibbs, ASH Alumni Jane Fritz '86 and Marcel de Winter '77.

Our hearts are heavy as we share the sad news of alumni and a current ASH staff whom have passed away in the last months. While we mourn this loss, we also remember their lives with love and joy in our hearts. Our sympathies to all who loved and knew them.

In Loving Memory of Kellie Gibbs

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Kellie Gibbs. She passed away on May 4, 2026 after a battle with cancer.

Kellie served the school in several roles over her twenty-five years at ASH, most notably in the Middle School, High School, and Student Support offices. Kellie loved supporting students at ASH, and she was an active and valued member of the works council for many years, supporting her colleagues.

Kellie had a creative heart – she was a weaver and a quilter, gifting many of her creations to friends and family. Our hearts are with all of those who knew and loved Kellie, as we move together through this difficult time. Let us honor the joy, learning, and compassion Kellie brought into our lives.

She will be dearly missed.

Jane Poteet (Fritz) '86

Jane passed away in the early morning hours of Dec. 30th, surrounded by her loving family. She faced a long and difficult battle with cancer with remarkable courage, strength, and grace. Jane attended ASH for all of high school and was one part of the crew on the #1 bus from Rotterdam. It was wonderful to welcome her back to home ASH in August 2025 for the 80’s reunion. Her dear friend Myriam ’86 shares what her friendship with Jane meant to her.

“Jane was among the first friends I made upon arriving at ASH as a Senior. She welcomed me with open arms, and her vibrant spirit made me feel so welcome. We shared classes, coffee breaks at the spot on Frederick Hendriklaan, and countless evenings dancing in Rotterdam with our friends. I will always cherish the reunion last August, where we relived those ASH memories with such joy. I am profoundly grateful for that final chance to see her.”

Marcel de Winter ('77)

Marcel de Winter - Grade 9 - 12 (73-77) passed away on December 18th, 2025. Marcel was at ASH for all of high school, connecting with his peers and making lifelong friends through his love of music. Fellow alum Larry ‘75 shares a fond memory of his friendship with Marcel, one of the many testaments to the ASH friendships Marcel had over the decades.

“I first met Marcel in the fall of 1973 at ASH. We didn’t get to know each other until a year later through our similar taste in music. This changed in the fall of 1977 as he appeared at my university in New Jersey. He had no idea I was there, and I remember him walking down a flight of stairs with a huge smile on his face. During this time, Marcel became the first of only two ASHers to meet the woman who became my wife of 45 years. After I graduated from university our lives took separate paths. I was sad to realize later that he lived and worked in NYC for many years, while I was an hour away and didn’t know. We reconnected at the DC reunion in 2010 and never lost touch after that. I was happy to be able to see and stay with him last year in Laren. Marcel was definitely one of a kind. He will be missed.”
