Weekend Tips: Friday, January 11th - Sunday, Janauary 13th

Welcome back from the Winter Break. And welcome to our new students and parents. I hope everyone had a good and relaxing break, and if you just arrived, many people are ready to help you settling in this great country. Some of you will return with stories about snow and harshly cold temperatures, others will talk about sunny beaches and sand, and if you stayed in The Netherlands, well, it was the usual....rain, wind and mild but, upon returning to our home, my husband noticed the tips of the tulips sprouting. That made him happy. So just keep in your mind, that spring will arrive in no time. Read further in these tips for a bit of spring feeling. And, to the Class of 2019 "Good Luck" during your final High School months. Enjoy!

Let's begin this weekend with a nice New Year's Concert, where you can enjoy the music of Excelsior, Wassenaar's concert band. They will perform their annual New Year's concert at the Culture Center Warenar this Sunday, January 13th at 13:00 and 16:00. So, two performances! Cats, the Musical, (in English) is still being performed in the Netherlands. Due to its success, extra weeks have been added in April!

January is usually a nice relaxing month, but February Break (and the other breaks) will come soon enough, so why not take a wander around the annual Vacation Fair at the Jaarbeurs in the Convention Center in Utrecht? The "Vacation Fair" really offers us an inside view to many places for shorter or longer vacations. The fair is open from Thursday, January 10th until Sunday, January 13th. The convention center is located under the same roof as the Central Station in Utrecht, so taking the train is very advisable. Utrecht itself is a wonderful city to visit, with a lovely old center and great museums. If someone in your house likes trains, don't forget to visit the Train Museum, after you have made a stop to the Vacation Fair.

These upcoming two weekends are the last that you can enjoy the Amsterdam Light Festival, ending Sunday January 20st. Enjoy walking, biking or taking a lovely boat ride admiring the modern light installations in the midst of the 17-18 century canals. And, maybe combine this with some "Spring Feeling" on Saturday, January 19th. It would be an excellent day to travel to Amsterdam and witness the official start of tulip season on National Tulip Day. The biggest garden of Amsterdam transforms Dam Square into a sea of color, where thousands of people come to pick a free bouquet of flowers every year. The event is organized by Dutch tulip growers who build a special tulip picking garden on Dam Square, where anyone can come to pick free tulips. This festive event kicks off tulip season because some 1.7 billion Dutch tulips are expected to bring spring into homes around the world. In addition to the garden, the tulip growers organize countless surprises and promotions, so be sure to stop by this fun event.

As you can see, January can be a very good month, even amidst the grey and cold weather. And, since this is the first weekend back, we all need to get some rest from the weeks that now are behind us. But, be prepared for a wonderful art year. 2019 is the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt van Rijn's death, and his life and heritage will be celebrated with exhibitions throughout the Netherlands, from Middelburg to Leeuwarden. More about these upcoming expositions in later Weekend Tips. So please, make sure you get your museum card. This upcoming year we'll have more exhibitions than weekends!

Enjoy your weekend!
