|We are strongly committed to student learning, and technology tools help us provide that 21st Century education.
Our Elementary School students start using technology in Kindergarten with classroom sets of iPads and cTouch interactive displays in every ECC classroom. Our grade 1 students use 1:1 iPads to support teaching and learning. UE students build on their skills and use of technology all the way through Grade 4. With beamers and interactive Smartboards in classrooms, a computer lab of 22 Macmini workstations, and a developing UE 1:1 iPad program, our students use technology to advance their learning in a variety of settings. Grade 2, 3 and 4 students also participate in a Creative Computing class.
|Technology in Kindergarten|
Students begin to use technology on a regular basis in Kindergarten and learn how technology can be used in many different disciplines. They are exposed to counting, sorting, colors and coloring activities in addition to patterns, puzzles and shapes. As the year progresses we begin to work on letter recognition, the alphabet, phonics and beginning reading exercises. We use age-appropriate web sites as well as several applications that offer engaging, child-friendly lessons.
|Technology in Grade 1|
Grade 1 students learn technology protocol from the start of the year; beginning with logging on with a username and password, opening and quitting the day’s scheduled application and logging off. Our activities focus on extending and reinforcing ideas and themes from the classroom using applications like KidPix, Kidspiration and selected Internet sites. We work on counting, geometric shapes and addition/subtraction fact activities in Math, phonics, rhyming words, writing, sentence rules and publishing activities in Language Arts, and plants, weather, seasons, clouds, animals and habitats in Science. Technology activities are planned in conjunction with the classroom teacher so that Technology use is an integral part of the curriculum.
|Technology in Grade 2|
Grade 2 students continue to use technology in a variety of ways that include using Internet sites, graphic drawing programs, a mapping skills program, iPods, iPads, and the digital camera. We use the Internet to learn about rocks and minerals, fossils, telling time, states of matter, habitats, and the food chain. We use a graphics drawing program to show our understanding of how a fossil is formed and the different animals in their habitat. We use the digital camera to photograph a solid, liquid or gas and then record our voice reading our description of that photo.
While working on these lessons the students are also learning basic technology skills such as opening, printing and saving files, dragging and dropping, drawing skills, and desktop management skills.
|Technology in Grade 3|
Grade 3 students further their working knowledge of computers and the ASH network when they demonstrate their technology knowledge and skills in projects that reinforce or extend their classroom studies. This might include making basic bar, pie, and line graphs in a drawing program, exporting or inserting graphics and images into other applications, or using Internet simulations to run a virtual lemonade stand. We use on-line activities to practice our facts on continents, multiplication and division, place value, counting money and making change.
We also dedicate a significant amount of time to word processing and work on proofreading, editing skills and desktop layout as our writing becomes more advanced.
|Technology in Grade 4|
Children in Grade 4 use a variety of software applications to complete projects connected to their classroom studies. They create simple spreadsheets and graphs, make their first web page, produce a slide show presentation while studying the geographical features of The Netherlands, and publish a fractured fairy tale and then add it as a podcast to their web page. Since students often use on-line activities as part of most lessons we also spend time learning how to safely use the Internet. In addition Grade 4 students develop their keyboarding skills, learning keys and correct finger position to improve speed and accuracy.
Our goal is that students exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology and that they can independently apply digital tools and resources to address a variety of tasks and problems.
