Elementary School

Beyond the Classroom

Beyond the Classroom
Beyond academics, Elementary School students experience essential dimensions of learning. They participate in a rich array of programs which are unique to ASH and very much a part of who we are. Regular field trips to Dutch museums, farms, orchards and historical places are linked to the Elementary School curriculum. Through Art Masterpiece, Extravaganza, International Day, and many other enrichment activities, our students learn about themselves, the ASH community and the world.

We also ask that parents, staff and students take note of our policy regarding the use of ASH Campus Facilities. Official school supervision of students ends upon school dismissal, at which point students must be accompanied by an adult at all times when on campus after school hours. During the vacation periods, students may not be on campus using the school facilities unless under the direct supervision of a member of the Faculty.
Art Masterpiece
The Parent Teacher Organization sponsors Art Masterpiece. It makes art relevant to young learners by forging a connection between great works of art and their own lives. Our parent volunteers introduce the art of many periods, cultures and media. Working in each Kindergarten to Grade 4 classroom, they prompt the children to look carefully at art, to ask questions about what they see, to think about technique and to form opinions.

Extravaganza is our annual musical program, with nearly 650 ASH students from ages 8 to 18 performing choral, instrumental, and dance numbers. Extravaganza showcases ensemble as well as full band and choral pieces. The evening generally includes world music from African, Asian, European, or Southeast Asian cultures, along with classic pieces and pop music selections. A school wide event for over 25 years, Extravaganza is the music event that no one should miss.

International Day
International Day is a celebration of nationality. Each year the parent run International Committee works together with students and teachers to present their home cultures in a cavalcade of learning that embraces the music, art, dance, food, religion and history of the 74 nationalities our student body represents. The children parade in the costumes of their native country. They perform songs and dances, bring in native food for a luncheon buffet and attend workshops that might teach about the customs and crafts from our many a cultures.
